How It Works
What are NDIS Core Supports?
Core Supports in your NDIS Plan are designed to offer practical, ongoing, long-term assistance to help you manage everyday life. As a home and community support specialist with over 25 years of experience, After-Care offers two categories of Core Supports:
Assistance with Daily Living
This category primarily includes Self-Care, which involves a support worker coming to your home to assist with daily activities that maintain your well-being and healthy lifestyle. These activities include showering, dressing, toilet assistance, transfers, getting ready for school or work, and meal assistance.
Another area of support covers Activities of Daily Life. This encompasses a wide range of personal domestic activities such as cooking your favorite meals, comprehensive home cleaning, and laundry. It also includes house or yard maintenance, such as lawn mowing, weeding, small home modifications, gutter cleaning, and even changing light bulbs.
Assistance with Social and Community Participation
This support helps you engage in your preferred social or recreational activities with assistance from a support worker. After-Care can provide this support on a one-on-one basis, but during holidays, we also offer small group holiday programs with a 1:3 support worker ratio, which includes some activity costs.

NDIS Registered Provider
We prioritize quality and safety. Our NDIS registration requires us to meet stringent government standards, ensuring that we have robust protections and safeguards in place. This commitment to excellence involves significant time and effort, which is reflected in our adherence to the NDIS Price Guide. As a registered provider, we actively consult with participants, treating everyone fairly and with respect.
On the other hand, many providers claim to offer NDIS services without being registered. While they might initially deliver good service, these unregistered providers often lack accountability and may be less responsive if issues arise.
Direct After Hours support
At After-Care, we offer our own afterhours service, ensuring that when you call, you speak directly to a specialist AfterHours Coordinator who can provide immediate support. Unlike traditional providers who outsource afterhours services to overseas messaging centers or other companies unfamiliar with your regular workers and services, we maintain a personalized approach. For those who self-manage, there is no external support; if a worker calls in sick, you're left to find a replacement or manage on your own.
Scheduling and Coordinating services
At After-Care, we implement a 'one call' approach for all support requests. This means you only need to call or email us once with your request. During office hours, your call is always answered by a person, and we will follow up by calling or emailing you back with the details of the support arrangements. If we can't meet your exact requirements, we work with you to find a satisfactory solution. You won't need to chase us or call again to get updates on your request.
In contrast, traditional disability providers often have you leave a message and wait for a callback, which may take days. If you are self-managing, you'll handle all the coordination yourself, potentially using a phone app or online system. While this can work well if you're organized and tech-savvy, you'll be responsible for finding a replacement if a worker calls in sick.
Same Day Call Back
After-Care will get back to you with an answer to most requests on the same day. If you ring after 3pm, the latest we will have an answer for you is early the following morning. Traditional Disability providers can take days or weeks to come back with an answer. For self-managing clients, it just depends on how responsible and responsive your personal carers are as individuals. Some may be great and others may need lots of chasing.
Easy Read Service Agreement
We focus on building lasting working relationships with our clients, rather than binding them with complex legal documents. Our NDIS agreement is concise, only six pages long, and strictly adheres to the necessary NDIA compliance requirements. You can terminate the agreement with just 24 hours' notice. In contrast, traditional disability providers often have agreements up to 10 pages long, written by lawyers with strict notice periods for termination. For those self-managing, if the support provider isn’t NDIS registered, there might not be an agreement in place to protect your rights.

Traditional Disability Providers: Many of these not-for-profits, despite boasting about their 50 or 100-year history, often lack direct in-home support experience. They have benefited from consistent funding regardless of their service quality and are still adjusting to the NDIS system, sometimes missing the mark on customer service.
Self-managed: Employing your own workers can be unpredictable; some may have extensive experience, while others might be new to the field, seeking quick earnings.
Longer office opening hours
After-Care’s office is open from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm daily. Unlike many Traditional Disability Providers, which often open at 9:00 am and close by 4:30 pm, our office hours ensure greater accessibility. With us, you’ll always speak to a knowledgeable team member rather than just a receptionist.
For those who are Self-Managed, having reliable workers who are easy to contact is crucial to ensure timely support when needed.
Support At Home Specialists
Unlike many other providers, we specialize solely in delivering high-quality, individualized Support At Home and community-based supports. With 25 years of experience, we have developed extensive expertise, a dedicated quality management system, and a team of committed personal support workers.
In contrast, many Traditional Disability Providers are large state or national bureaucracies that focus on residential houses, employment, and day programs. For them, Support At Home is often an afterthought.
For those who are Self-Managed, ensuring that your employed workers are capable and reliable is crucial for effective support.
Daytime, Evening, Weekend and overnight availability
After-Care offers a wide range of workers available every day of the week from 7 AM to 10 PM, including overnight support if needed. In contrast, traditional disability providers often have limited availability on weekends and evenings, making it difficult to find replacements in case of cancellations. When you self-manage your staff, it’s often easy to find workers for daytime shifts, but many are unwilling to work weekends or evenings, leading to significant gaps in your support. As a result, you may have to adjust your support schedule to fit your workers' availability rather than focusing on your needs. This is a common issue that tends to develop over time.
Cleaning, house and garden maintenance
After-Care provides a comprehensive range of in-home support services, including fully personalized gardening and home maintenance teams. We also have a network of vetted, reliable tradespeople for home and garden modifications. Unlike traditional disability providers who primarily offer personal or social support, we can have the same worker provide both cleaning and personal support in a single visit. When you self-manage, you can arrange these services yourself, but if the work isn't up to standard, you'll be responsible for resolving the issues.
Safe, experienced, trained support workers
Every employee, from support workers to the Managing Director, undergoes a NDIS Screening Check before starting with us. Each staff member has at least a Certificate III qualification and, on average, a minimum of 5 years of experience in supporting people with disabilities. We also provide ongoing training to ensure our workers' skills remain current and meet your individual needs, including 'Meet and Greet' shifts and 'shadow shifts' if required.
Traditional disability providers should be performing the same checks, but many have expanded rapidly to meet NDIS demand and often have newer workers with less experience. They are still figuring out how to provide ongoing professional development under government funding.
When self-managing, do you have the knowledge and skills to assess whether your workers' training and checks are adequate and properly conducted? Many workers may not meet the minimum requirements or may have left other disability providers due to issues you might soon face.
Locally based
After-Care has been based on the Mornington Peninsula for over 25 years. We have expanded our coverage area slowly and carefully to maintain the local knowledge and workforce that underpin our high standards. Traditional disability providers are increasingly becoming large corporate businesses. While they may have a local office now, there's a risk it could be closed in the future. Their support workers might be coordinated from an office on the other side of town by people who are unfamiliar with your local issues.
One advantage of self-managed supports is that you often use workers who live nearby. However, without an organization to maintain professional standards, your workers can become too involved in your private life, offering unsolicited opinions on your personal matters or, worse, sharing your private information with others in the same area.
Person centered approach
After-Care has almost exclusively provided individual supports, ensuring we are entirely focused on delivering the supports you need. Our systems are completely person-centered, which is why we have thrived as a private business for over 25 years. Traditional disability providers, on the other hand, have historically received funding regardless of the quality of their services. Many are struggling to adapt to the NDIS model, where clients can choose to leave if they are dissatisfied with the service.
With self-managed supports, you would expect to receive person-centered services since you handle all the organizing and training. However, over time, workers might try to alter arrangements to better suit their own needs. Once you become reliant on a worker, they may end up having more influence over support times and days.
Minimum 1 hour bookings
After-Care can provide support for just one hour at a time without any issues. We have done this for years, and all our systems are designed to accommodate this type of support. In contrast, most traditional disability providers require a minimum of two hours per shift, even if you don't need that much support. Additionally, they often won't perform other tasks, like cleaning, to make that extra time useful.
Generous cancellation policy
We require 24 hours notice for cancellations. For longer shifts, we try not to charge for the entire shift. Traditional disability providers typically require 1-2 days' notice and always charge for the full shift, no exceptions. The NDIS states that we are entitled to charge for cancellations up to 7 days before.
When self-managing, it's up to you to negotiate these terms. However, if your worker relies on your NDIS supports for their income, they may be reluctant to allow free cancellations, which could become a source of friction over time.
Flat weekend rates
As part of our commitment to fair and affordable supports, we charge the current NDIS Price Guide TTP Saturday rate for both Saturdays and Sundays. Traditional service providers often charge the maximum rates throughout the entire week, resulting in a difference of over $22 per hour on Sundays due to their high overhead costs.
When self-managing, the rates you pay depend on the agreement you have with your workers.
Choice of your vehicle or we supply a vehicle for community access
After-Care offers flexible vehicle options: our worker can use your personal vehicle if it is modified for your needs, or they can provide a standard vehicle. We also have a wheelchair-accessible vehicle available in certain circumstances. Traditional disability providers often require extensive paperwork, making it difficult for their workers to use your vehicle. Additionally, it can be very costly for them to provide a worker vehicle.
When self-managing, the decision is yours. If you employ young workers, be aware that they may not have a full license or extensive driving experience. Ensure you check their license and car registration are current and have an agreement in place regarding insurance.
Support Booking Guarantee
Once a support booking is confirmed by us, we guarantee to make every possible effort to ensure a suitable worker arrives to provide your support. This gives you peace of mind even if a worker faces a personal emergency, car trouble, or calls in sick. Traditional disability providers often cancel shifts at the last minute, leaving you without enough time to arrange alternative help from family or friends.
When self-managing, you are entirely dependent on your workers' reliability and dedication. If they don’t show up, you will have to follow up with them and find a replacement yourself.
