Tips for Positive Ageing

Are you feeling positive about growing older? You should be!

WHAT IS POSITIVE AGEING?

Positive ageing is an approach to growing older, that focuses on positivity, healthy choices, and longevity, to help us live happier, healthier, and longer lives. Some people may feel uneasy about ageing. But studies show that a positive outlook on ageing can actually ward off age-related illnesses, and keep our minds fit and happy!

STAY ACTIVE

To stay positive as we age, it’s important to keep our minds and bodies active. How much physical activity you can muster is up to you. But in general, those over the age of 65 should aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity a day, five days a week. This could mean a lighter exercise session, like a walk in the local park, a spot of gardening, or a harder session, like a visit to the gym.

Conveniently, exercise helps us keep our minds active too. But to keep your mind really fit and strong, regularly enjoy activities that stimulate you mentally, like reading a book, or doing a crossword puzzle.

KEEP CONNECTED

Do you feel happier and more at ease when you’re with friends and family? It’s no coincidence! Companionship helps encourage positive thoughts. So, try to spend time with family, friends, and the people in your community as often as you’d like.

STAY CALM

Feeling some stress every now and then is normal—in fact, it can actually be healthy! However, too much stress can have a negative impact on our bodies, especially as we age. So, practice mindfulness, and if you’re feeling on edge, try some stress-relieving activities like yoga or meditation.

LOOK FORWARD

Although it’s great to live in the moment, looking to the future can help us stay positive post-retirement. Having goals—or at least events to look forward to, can greatly increase our sense of purpose, and overall positivity.

To look forward, you don’t have to plan a month-long trip around the Caribbean (although you can if you want to!). Looking forward could be as simple as inviting your neighbour around for coffee each Friday, or planning to attend a show at your local community centre.

STAY HEALTHY

It’s essential to look after our general health throughout our lives, especially as we get older. Make sure you continue to eat hearty, nutritious meals, chock full of veggies and protein. Drink lots of water and visit your GP and dentist for regular check-ups.
