Understanding Classifications 7 & 8 of the Support at Home Program

When your care needs are very high or critical, staying at home doesn’t mean you have to go it alone. The Support at Home Program now offers two of its highest classification levels — 7 and 8 — designed specifically for people who require intensive, ongoing care in the comfort of their own homes.

What are Classifications 7 and 8?

These top tiers provide the highest level of in-home support available under the program:

  • Classification 7 is for those needing very high-level daily support — multiple visits each day, full personal care (such as feeding, bathing, transferring), advanced clinical oversight and more.

  • Classification 8 is the most comprehensive option — designed for individuals with critical health or cognitive needs, including 24/7 monitoring, specialised equipment, palliative care at home and full coordination across health-care teams.

What does this level of support mean in practice?

At these levels, care covers a wide range of services so you can remain at home with dignity and safety:

  • Full personal-care assistance (bathing, dressing, continence, mobility)

  • Intensive clinical care (medications, wound care, allied-health services)

  • Household support and modifications (to make your home safe and accessible)

  • Meal planning and feeding support where needed

  • Social and emotional support — because real care includes wellbeing

  • Assistive technology and home-modification equipment (hoists, ramps, monitoring systems)

Why you’d be allocated classification 7 or 8.

  • If you’re facing multiple chronic conditions, advanced cognitive changes (e.g., dementia) or end-of-life care needs, these classifications are designed to keep you at home, avoiding the need to move to residential care.

  • They give you and your family peace of mind, thanks to professional coordination, high-level clinical care and a strong safety net.

  • Staying in your own home means familiar surroundings, connections and independence — all with extra support.

How After-Care fits in

At After-Care, we understand navigating high-level home support can feel overwhelming. Here’s how we help:

  • We assist with the assessment process and help you understand if classifications 7 or 8 suit your needs.

  • We match you with dedicated care teams, clinical oversight and tailored services to meet your unique situation.

  • We help coordinate the advance equipment, home modifications and safety planning that these levels often require.

  • Our aim: You stay at home, feel supported and secure — and your family can focus on living, not just caring.

What to do next

If you or your loved one has serious or complex support needs, it’s a good time to ask:

  • Have you been assessed for the new Support at Home classifications?

  • Do you understand what level you’re at — and whether a higher classification might apply?

  • Are you working with a provider who can deliver the coordination and care needed for classifications 7 or 8?

We’re here to guide you through all of that. Starting the conversation early means you’re better positioned to receive the right support, in the right place, for as long as possible — and in the home you love.
